The first thing that comes to mind when we think of a Like a Boss girl? It’s Akilah, obviously! (Check out her blog by the same name here.) This enterprising bloggess/social media guru is going to be making an exclusive series of videos for Like a Boss on everything from workin’ it on the World Wide Web to moving to a new city. Before you watch her first vid below (all about five easy steps for starting a blog), get to know this fabulous female with our quick Q&A:
What makes you a Like a Boss girl?
Akilah: I am a Like a Boss girl because I want to live my life by my own rules. I know how I want my life to play out and I know that I have to do something different and more exciting than just working 9-5 for 40 years to get it. I learned in high school and college that working hard on things that truly interest me can be extremely rewarding (personally and financially) and that I had to strike out on my own. So—since then, I’ve been doing so and I can honestly say it’s the best choice I’ve made!
What’s your life story in a nutshell?
Akilah: My name’s Akilah, and I was born on the Kentucky side of Cincinnati. I’m the youngest of four kids, and we’re all pretty smart, so I ended up skipping 7th and 8th grade. I was in forensics (speech and drama), yearbook, choir, student council and a million other little clubs, but photography and comedy were always my true passions. I graduated high school at 15 and went to college where I majored in Broadcasting and Mass Communications, but Facebook started as soon as I got there so I became super involved in social media, which led to blogging, which has led to my career in Social Media Marketing. Fast forward, and I now live in Brooklyn, NY working on social media for movies, doing comedy with Upright Citizens Brigade and making YouTube videos for my channel!
What made you move from the Midwest to Manhattan? What’s your city girl life like?
Akilah: New York has a million opportunities that the Midwest doesn’t. The entertainment industry in Cincinnati is unsurprisingly meager and I wanted to do something really big with my life. I didn’t always think it would be NYC, but I’m figuring it out. New York is so fast-paced that going home feels like I’m stuck in slow motion. I am still re-learning how to relax and do “nothing.” I’ve definitely learned how to prioritize time/money and always be on my toes. You just never know what’s waiting around the corner here!
What topics will you be covering in your Like a Boss videos?
Akilah: I plan on keeping the focus on building your brand and ventures online, while also talking about how to plan to move to a city and how to deal with hardships you may face
while trying to do your own thing. Being an entrepreneur is difficult, but like anything, there are tricks and tools that will help you rise to the occasion.
What book/song/whatever have you been obsessed with this summer?Akilah: I’m really bummed summer is ending, but I know my summer anthem, “Mirrors” by Justin Timberlake, will be all over my iPod for years to come. Is there nothing that guy can’t do?
